DUTCH GAME WEEK FILM PROGRAM: VIDEODROME (1983)
During Dutch Game Week, Chassé Theater will screen multiple films to celebrate. One of them is David Cronenberg’s bizarre horror classic Videodrome. This screening includes a special Dutch Game Week introduction by Playgrounds founder and director Leon van Rooij.
When Max Renn (James Woods) is searching for sleazy programs for a cable television channel, he stumbles upon the show Videodrome, in which people are tortured and killed on camera. Max becomes obsessed, and as he continues his investigation, it turns out that Videodrome is controlling and manipulating his brain to such an extent that Max gradually transforms into a human video recorder: a fusion of man and machine, of hardware and software. Shortly: video kills our free will.
Leon has been working in the creative industry for 30 years. During this time, he has held various roles such as (art) director, animator, teacher, and curator. Since 2006 he has been the founder and director of Playgrounds: an institute, platform and festival organization in the fields of illustration, animation, film, games, digital design, and art. He teaches in the Master of Animation program at AKV St. Joost/Avans. Since 2023, he has been organizing the Dutch Game Week with Playgrounds.
